Monique Bégin, 4 other women honoured for contributions

The Hon. Monique Bégin, political leader and activitist, was one of five women who receieved the 2015 Governor General’s Person Case Award on April 21, 2016. Each is being recognized as a nation builider who has made important contributions to Canada.

The award is given reach year by Famous 5 Ottawa in honour of the Famous 5: five women who in 1929 successfully advocated for Canadian women to be included in the legal definition of “person”, opening the door to voting and other basic rights.

This year’s other recipients were:

  • Montreal academic and advocate Marie-Thérèse Chicha;
  • Vancouver family physician and community leader Ruth Elwood Martin;
  • Ottawa legal activist, scholar and educator Sheila McIntyre; and
  • Halifax community leader advocate and volunteer Dee M. Dooley
